Layout Description

The location is in an 8 x 12 alcove room. The basic structure uses Sievers benchwork constructed in a bent dogbone shape. Half inch particle board is fitted on the benchwork. The track plan consists of a double loop using Atlas 73 code track for the main line. Some of the non-mainline trackage uses Kato Unitrack and some Atlas code 100 track (leftovers from previous setups). The road bed consists of Track-bed by Woodland Scenics that was painted gray before laying the track and adding the ballast.

The layout is powered by a Digitrax DCS100 5 amp DCC Command Station & Booster. Outer loop is divided into 3 blocks; inner loop is divided into 4 blocks, one of which contains a reversing loop. Additional setup includes block occupancy detection and trackside signals. Interfaced with a JMRI computer application, turnouts can be controlled and signals and block occupancy can be monitored on a computer.

The layout is basically divided into two operating areas: the town of Pine Valley and the suburb of East Pine Valley. Pine Valley comprises a town center and an industrial complex with spurs serving the various industries. East Pine includes the railroad station, a grain co-op, and the diesel maintenance facility and the related spur tracks. Also in this area is an upper level where a yard office is located and tracks which serve as a staging area.
